Trading

TanzaniteOne Trading is a Group subsidiary based in Arusha that purchases rough tanzanite from smaller miners, brokers and dealers. TanzaniteOne Trading operates under the guidelines of the Tucson Tanzanite Protocols.

In support of more stability in terms of rough prices, TanzaniteOne Trading pays a small premium. This strategy has been well received in the local market and as a result,TanzaniteOne Trading has become a market leader in procuring highquality material.

TanzaniteOne Marketing is the Group’s marketing and sales arm for rough tanzanite. The subsidiary consolidates the available mined and traded rough tanzanite and is able to add further value by applying a proprietary rough tanzanite grading system and preparing parcels of material specifically suited to the individual business needs of each of its eight sightholders.

/This is achieved through the “Preferred Supply Strategy”, a world first in the coloured gemstone industry. The aim is to grow the global market for tanzanite through strategic collaborative relationships with exclusive distribution partners, known as sightholders, selected from the world's leading gemstone houses and jewellery manufacturers.

Unique selling features

Rarity - Tanzanite's only known source in the world is a 5km strip of land near Mount Kilimanjaro, northern Tanzania. This single, limited source renders tanzanite at least a thousand times rarer than diamonds. Colour - Tanzanite is uniquely trichroic, which means that in its rough form, it radiates three different colours from each of its crystallographic axes: blue, violet and burgundy. Once cut and polished, tanzanite ranges from electric violets and pale blues to deep royals and rich indigos. African mystique - Tanzanite was formed over 585 million years ago, yet this remarkable treasure remained hidden beneath the earth’s surface until just 1967, when according to local sources, a Maasai tribesman herding his cattle stumbled upon some crystals on the ground. Whilst the exact story of tanzanite’s discovery remains something of a mystery, Maasai communities have built their own legends about the miraculous find. They tell stories of how the land was set ablaze by a bolt of lightning, and that it was the heat from the “magic fire in the sky” that transformed crystals on the ground into shimmering blue-violet gems. At first, it was thought that these were unusually vibrant sapphires. But it was soon confirmed that the new gemstones were more complex than a sapphire, with a color that was more alluring, more exotic and entirely unexpected. Relative price & investment value - Quality for quality, tanzanite is currently about a third of the price of sapphire. This, compounded by its exceptional rarity, has made tanzanite an investment stone of choice.

Sightholders

The Preferred Supply Strategy, which is a world first in the coloured gemstone industry, aims to grow the global market for tanzanite through strategic collaborative relationships with exclusive customers, ‘Sightholders', selected from the world's leading gemstone houses and jewellery manufacturers.

Sightholders have been chosen for their focus on tanzanite, ability to make a long-term commitment, distribution capabilities, understanding of the need for vertical integration and most importantly their operational standards of integrity. Their belief in and commitment to supporting an ethical route to market and growth of the market as a whole has also been a prerequisite for their appointment.

TanzaniteOne has initially appointed eight Sightholders, with plans to increase this number in the medium term. These initial eights are listed below:
