Board of Directors

Michael Adams, Non-Executive Chairman
Mr Adams graduated from Cambridge University in 1969. He has 36 years experience in the financial services sector, including 26 years in senior management. During this time he has also been directly involved in a broad spectrum of industry since his private investment group, the MAA group began to focus on direct investment activities in 1982. MAA has interests in mining, heavy industry and information technology. He is, or has been, the Chairman, Vice Chairman, President or Director of a wide range of public and private companies.

Ami Mpungwe, Non-Executive Deputy Chairman
Mr Mpungwe has been Chairman of the Group's Tanzanian subsidiary since March 2000, and has been integral to its establishment and development. He has an Honours degree in International Relations and Political Science and a diploma in International Law and has spent 25 years in the diplomatic service, including six years as Tanzanian Ambassador to South Africa.

He holds directorships in National Bank of Commerce, Tanzania Breweries Ltd, Kilombero Sugar Co. Ltd, Air Tanzania, Maersk Tanzania Ltd, MultiChoice Tanzania Ltd, and NIKO Insurance Co. (Tanzania) Ltd.

Nicholas Sibley, Non-Executive Director
Mr Sibley is a Chartered Accountant. He was formerly Chairman of Wheelock Capital from 1994 to 1997, as well as Executive Chairman of Barclays de Zoete Wedd (Asia Pacific) Limited from 1989 to 1993. He is a former Managing Director of Jardine Flemings and Barclays de Zoete Wedd Holdings. He is currently Chairman of Aquarius Platinum and a Director of Corney & Barrow Group and Asia Pacific Fund Inc.

Edward Nealon, Non-Executive Director
Mr Nealon is a geologist with 30 years experience in the mining and exploration industry. After graduating in 1974, he commenced his career in South Africa with Anglo American Corporation, before moving to Australia in 1980 where he spent two years in exploration with the Rio Tinto Group. He founded his own consulting company in 1983 and has practised in most of the world's major mining centres. He holds a masters degree in Geology and is a member of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Mark Summers, Non-Executive Director
Mr Summers is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Management Accountant. After completing his articles at Coopers & Lybrand, he joined Anglo American's Corporate and International Finance Department and from 1999 to 2002 was an associate director in the Mining Corporate Finance division at HSBC, where his corporate clients included Afgem, De Beers, Kroondal Platinum and the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa. In April 2002 he joined the business as Finance Director. Mr Summers resigned from his position as Chief Financial Officer in July 2007, however, he maintains his position on the Board as a non-Executive Director.

Ryke Zane Swanepoel - Managing Director
Prior to being appointed General Manager of TanzaniteOne Mining Limited, Zane ran a poly-metallic mine in Armenia, three dimension stone mines in the UK and various chromite operations in Zimbabwe. Zane has over 27 years of mining experience of which 23 years have been in a managerial roll.

At TanzaniteOne, Zane oversees the whole mining and social operation as well as being a member of the companies Executive Committee, whose roll is to plan and fulfil the strategic needs of the company.

Bernard Buberwa Buhoma  – Legal and Compliance Manager
Prior to his admission to the Roll of Advocates in 2001, Ben was a senior Resident Magistrate for nine years. He was appointed Assistant Director, District Courts- Court of Appeal of Tanzania in February, 2001. Having been its retainer Advocates for over five years, Ben joined TanzaniteOne in March, 2007. He has vast experience in preparing and conducting cases, both civil and criminal as well as dealing with corporate, conveyances, investment, labour and mining related matters. He is an active member of the Tanganyika Law Society and the East African Law Society.

Jacques Fouche – New Projects and Development Manager
Jacques has been appointed Mine Manager for TanzaniteOne since 2005 and has had previous experience in both Narrow Reef mining (Platinum) as well as Massive Underground Trackless Mining (Diamond).

With a proven production track record and project experience, he will be heading up New Projects and Development for TanzaniteOne, responsible for investigating new mining operations.

Faustus Felician Rutahindurwa - Senior Geologist
Prior to joining AFGEM in November 2000, Faustus held various positions with SAMAX Limited, including Exploration Geologist, and later moved on to one of their subsidiaries, GRAPHTAN Limited where he later was appointed as Chief Geologist. In 1998, he became a partner in a tanzanite mining concession on Block D, where he gained broad knowledge and expertise relating to tanzanite’s geology and extraction. Faustus is currently a key member of TanzaniteOne Mining Geology Department and participates in all areas of geology for TanzaniteOne. To date, he has successfully integrated local knowledge and geological models into the tanzanite operation.

Robert Grafen-Greaney- Chief Geologist
Robert graduated with honours in Geology from the Camborne School of Mines, UK, and started work with TanzaniteOne Ltd in July 2006. He currently manages the geology department whilst performing the required geological tasks. Robert has been instrumental in applying new techniques and technologies to the mining operation and is currently studying for an MSc in Mining Engineering.

Glenham Shaw - Processing Plant Manager
Glen has over 30 years’ operational and management experience in metallurgy, including nine years at various operations within the Metorex Group of Companies as plant superintendent, gold plant manager and metallurgical superintendent (for Graphtan). Prior to joining AFGEM in 1999, Glen worked at Barbrook Gold Mine, Falconbridge and Havelock Asbestos Mines Limited.

At TanzaniteOne Mining Limited, Glen is responsible for the planning, implementation and maintenance of systems and procedures for processing plant operation, as well as the efficient operations of the processing plant.

Emmanuel Ernest Mtawali - Civil and Construction Manager
Ernest completed a Diploma in Mining through the Heilebury School of Mines, Canada and a Post Graduate Diploma in Production Management. Ernest served in various posts at Williams Diamonds Limited for a total of 12 years. These included Heavy Media Operator, Pits Superintendent and Plant Foreman. He joined AFGEM (now TanzaniteOne Mining Limited) in July 1999 to oversee civil engineering and construction.

Lusekelo Mwakalukwa – Corporate Governance Manager
Prior to joining TanzaniteOne Mining Company in April 2007, Lusekelo had been employed as a lawyer in various law firms, notably Rex Attorneys in Dar es Salaam, a leading firm in corporate and mining law consultancy. Lusekelo is involved in corporate governance and compliance matters, which broadly encompass investor relations, coordinating various aspects of governance as well as legal compliance matters. Lusekelo has an Honours Degree in Law from the University of Dar es Salaam and has dealt with corporate and investment matters at length.

Adrian Roy Banks - Managing Director – TanzaniteOne Trading Limited (a trading operation that is 75% held by TanzaniteOne Mining Limited)
Adrian joined the then Merelani Mining Limited in 1999 to assist in the development of the initial infrastructure at the company’s tanzanite mine. Adrian helped in the development of the tanzanite sorting operation, including the equipping and securitisation of the sort house, building and training the team and developing a rough tanzanite grading system. In September 2003, Merelani Mining Limited ( now TanzaniteOne Mining Limited), together with a Tanzanian trading company, set up Tatan (Pty) Ltd (now TanzaniteOne Trading Limited), a tanzanite trading company in Arusha, which Adrian currently manages.

Lameck Mchuma - Finance Manager (Local Finances)
Lameck is a CPA holder and registered member of NBAA (National Board of Accountants and Auditors). He is a graduate from the Institute of Finance Management. He worked for Drillcorp (Tanzania) Limited and Iam Gold corporation as management accountant. Lameck joined TanzaniteOne Mining Limited in February 2007.

Farai Manyemba - Finance Manager (International Finances)
Farai is a Chartered Accountant. After completing his articles and working at various managerial levels at Deloitte & Touché , he joined Zimasco (Pty) Limited (chrome business) as Group Accountant and later as Group Audit manager before joining  Mimosa Platinum Mine (a significant platinum business), a division of Aquarius Platinum Limited, as the finance executive . In January 2007, Farai joined the business as financial manager.
